  • Cat with a Knife Emblazoned with “Kitsune” Seen in Brooklyn

Cat standing over a knife with the words "Kitsune" on the blade. A sticker on a lightpole in Park Slope, Brooklyn.

This illustrated cat standing over a kitchen knife with the word “Kitsune” written on it made me pause while walking in Park Slope, Brooklyn the other day. Kitsune generally relates to the Japanese myth of trickster foxes, but I have been unable to discover what it might mean in this specific context–a band, a brand, an artist? Regardless, I admired the work. And, it reminded me of one of the patches that I wear in my backpack seen below.

An embroidered patch of a black cat carrying a knife in its mouth. Other embroided patches are seen in the background.
  • Figures Within a Face Artwork Found in Trash on Brooklyn Sidewalk

Figures and faces artwork on a bookshelf among trash on a Brooklyn sidewalk, Feb. 2024.

I saw this figures within a face artwork drawn on a white bookshelf among some trash on the sidewalk in Brooklyn yesterday. Its inventiveness caught my attention despite carrying a load of groceries back home.

  • Bronze Angel Memorial for Benjamin Franklin Romaine in Green-Wood Cemetery

Benjamin Franklin Romain memorial with bronze angel statue in repose. In Green-Wood Cemetery, Brooklyn, New York.

While walking in Green-Wood Cemetery, I recently approached this beautiful memorial for Benjamin Franklin Romaine. A bronze angel holding a hammer and chisel sits in repose of its completed work creating this monument.

Jeff Richman discovered the name of the angel’s sculptor as Raffaello Romanelli. He explains how he worked it out in this blog post on the official cemetery’s website.

Below are close-up photos of the sculpture.

  • Japanese Style Cat Mask Hanging on a Park Slope Door

Kitsune-style cat mask hanging on a wooden exterior door of a house in Park Slope, Brooklyn, New York

I saw this cat mask hanging on a house door near Prospect Park awhile back. It reminded me of kitsune masks. Despite thinking the mask is cute, I was a little creeped out when I first saw it from a distance in the dark.

  • Here Lie the Secrets of the Visitors of Green-Wood Cemetery

Sophie Calle installation of "Here Lie the Secrets of the Visitors of Green-Wood Cemetery," 2017. A obelisk with a box with a slot for paper beneath it.

Y and I have walked pasted the hill where this monument is more times than we can count since moving next door to Green-Wood Cemetery two years ago, but we never looked at Sophie Calle’s 2017 art installation closely until a few days ago. It’s an obelisk inscribed with the words, “Here Lie the Secrets of the Visitors of Green-Wood Cemetery.” Beneath the obelisk is a stone box with a slot big enough to slide an envelope through. The idea is for visitors to write secrets on a piece of paper and then slide them into the slot. We could see through the slot that the box was full of papers, full of secrets. Information about the installation is here, and where it is located in the cemetery can be found on Google Maps here.
