  • Dorman Products Orange Metal Parts Drawers

    Ellis Auto Parts, my family’s business that closed down in 1996 when my parents retired, used to carry Dorman Products, a line of automotive hardware such as bolts, nuts, washers, pins, caps, and a variety of other kinds of parts. While my dad sold a lot of our remaining stock when he closed the store, he kept a lot of unsold product and the metal drawers that we kept the stock in. When I was at home, I stacked up more of these drawers to create a grid against one wall. The full grid is 5 x 5, but I took a photo of 4 x 4 because one of the corner bins was missing a drawer that I couldn’t find–it is likely somewhere in the shop but waits to be rediscovered. I’m glad that we had access to all of these parts during my trip this time, because we made use of them in our many projects.

    A Step Toward the Unified Macro-Mind or a Cybernetic Lawnmower in the Groves of Academia? :
    Generated Text and the Future of College Writing

    Recently, Large Language Models and generated texts have sent shockwaves through the academic community. Do they represent the initial glimmerings on a new horizon of transhuman creativity or are they, in Noam Chomsky’s phrase, merely “glorified autofill,” a “high-tech plagiarism” based on a self-cannibalizing database? Where old-fashioned plagiarism now seems like a relatively simple matter of ethics and originality, Artificial Intelligence and the looming specter of the Literary Chatbot bring a whole host of more tangled issues of Perception, Knowledge, Autonomy, and Class Warfare into the classroom.

    Many believe the neural net models of cognition don’t begin to pierce the mystery of the mind—Roger Penrose and others remain unconvinced that human thinking can be reduced meat-puppet computation, while John Searle’s Chinese Room parable undermines the idea that mere symbol-juggling can ever result in emergent consciousness. Still, techno-optimists believe we are at the precipice of an age of cyborg enhancements in which human potential will be radically expanded and the primate mind will be uploaded into Cloud-dwelling immortality.

    We will be discussing these issues and many others in an open symposium with CUNY professors Jason Ellis, Carlos Hernandez, Lisa Sarti, and Shane Snipes. We encourage our colleagues to come to voice their concerns and hopes on this increasingly crucial and urgent matter.

    The event is named in memory of Robert Lapides, a past English department professor at BMCC. Reading his obituary, you get the sense that he did good work that saved voices from the past from erasure, and created space for voices in the present to carry the work forward.

    “Robert Lapides, professor emeritus in the English Department, husband of Professor Diane Dowling, died on January 1, 2021. At BMCC for over 40 years, Professor Lapides will be remembered for his passion, his life-long fight for social, economic, and racial justice, and his commitment to building communities where differences can be expressed. Never afraid to speak up or ask questions, he was genuinely interested in his students and colleagues. His intense curiosity about people, places, politics, history, literature, psychology, religion–about what it means to be human–informed all his efforts. He encouraged his students to embrace their humanity, including the parts of themselves they felt they needed to hide, building their courage to write honestly. His legacy can be found in his influence on the many students and colleagues he worked with, the online communities he created, in his faculty magazine Hudson River, and for editing Lodz Ghetto, collected writings left behind by Jews confined to the Lodz Ghetto in WWII. Until the end, he was working on his book about the creative development of Charles Dickens, which will be published posthumously” (from Ellen Moody’s Under the Sign of Sylvia blog, 25 Mar. 2021).

    I made this image of an anthropomorphic cat hacker with Stable Diffusion while thinking about the illicit computer hardware in Vernor Vinge’s “True Names” (1981) and award-winning .kkrieger first person shooter that occupies only 96K disk space and procedurally creates its textures, music, and sound effects at runtime–simply put a phenomenal bit of programming. I got wine setup to run .kkrieger on my computer, so I’m thinking a post about it is in the works.

  • Finding the Best Bang for the Buck in Generative AI Hardware

    As I documented last year, I made a substantial investment in my computer workstation for doing local text and image generative AI work by upgrading to 128GB DDR4 RAM and swapping out a RTX 3070 8GB video card for NVIDIA’s flagship workstation card, the RTX A6000 48GB video card.

    After I used that setup to help me with editing the 66,000 word Yet Another Science Fiction Textbook (YASFT) OER, I decided to sell the A6000 to recoup that money (I sold it for more than I originally paid for it!) and purchase a more modest RTX 4060 Ti 16GB video card. It was challenging for me to justify the cost of the A6000 when I could still work, albeit more slowly, with lesser hardware.

    Then, I saw Microcenter begin selling refurbished RTX 3090 24GB Founder Edition video cards. While these cards are three years old and used, they sell for 1/5 the price of an A6000 and have nearly identical specifications to the A6000 except for having only half the VRAM. I thought it would be slightly better than plodding along with the 4060 Ti, so I decided to list that card on eBay and apply the money from its sale to the price of a 3090.

    As you can see above, the 3090 is a massive video card–occupying three slots as opposed to only two slots by the 3070, A6000, and 4060 Ti shown below.

    The next hardware investment that I plan to make is meant to increase the bandwidth of my system memory. The thing about generative AI–particularly text generative AI–is the need for lots of memory and more memory bandwidth. I currently have dual-channel DDR4-3200 memory (51.2 GB/s bandwidth). If I upgrade to a dual-channel DDR5 system, the bandwidth will increase to a theoretical maximum of 102.4 GB/s. Another option is to go with a server/workstation with a Xeon or Threadripper Pro that supports 8-channel DDR4 memory, which would yield a bandwidth of 204.8 GB/s. Each doubling of bandwidth roughly translates to doubling how many tokens (the constituent word/letter/punctuation components that generative AI systems piece together to create sentences, paragraphs, etc.) are output by a text generative AI using CPU + GPU inference (e.g., llama.cpp). If I keep watching for sales, I can piece together a DDR5 system with new hardware, but if I want to go with an eight-channel memory system, I will have to purchase the hardware used on eBay. I’m able to get work done so I will keep weighing my options and keep an eye out for a good deal.

  • More PNY NVIDIA RTX 4060Ti 16GB Photos

    I’ve been pleased with the performance of the PNY NVIDIA RTX 4060Ti 16GB video card that I got to replace the A6000 (before and after photos here). While the new card has less memory, bandwidth, and horsepower, it does what I need it to do.

    Also, as you can see in the photo above, it’s installed length is the same as my ASUS micro ATX motherboard. The card’s specs state that it is 9.65″ long, which makes sense accounting for the bracket that extends beyond the motherboard at the back of the case. For the space conscious builders, this card is a nice fit for micro ATX builds.
