Statue of Pope John Paul II Outside the Rectory of Our Lady of Częstochowa-St Casimir Parish Church

Statue of Pope John Paul II outside the rectory of Our Lady of Częstochowa-St Casimir Parish Church in Brooklyn, New York.

Walking down 25th Street in Brooklyn, I saw this statue of Pope John Paul II that captures, I think, the kindliness of his visage. It rests atop a marble pedestal outside the rectory of Our Lady of Częstochowa-St Casimir Parish church. The church’s grounds extend from 25th Street to 24th Street, where the church’s face and entrance are located. Originally formed to serve Polish immigrants in this corner of Brooklyn, it continues to offer services in Polish and English.

When I traveled to Italy with my high school Latin Club more than 30 years ago, I had hoped to get a glimpse of Pope John Paul II when we visited St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City. Unfortunately, the timing was off and there were no official appearances.
